Wilson Reading System® Professional Development

Wilson provides several levels of professional development and support for teachers using the Wilson Reading System (WRS), including a ten-hour Overview Workshop, an Intervention Workshop and Intensive professional development with Level I and Level II certification.

In addition, teachers have the advantage of Wilson Academy® , a dynamic online resource with access to robust course content and additional instructional material. Not only is this support available where and when needed, it also enables teachers to create a positive learning community.

WRS Introductory Workshop / Overview

This ten-hour workshop is designed to introduce the principles of multisensory structured language education with the Wilson Reading System. A Wilson Trainer introduces general program concepts and provides specific instruction and practice with the lesson plan.

The Overview Workshop is the prerequisite for all other WRS professional development and required to join Wilson Academy.

WRS Introductory Workshop

This 15-hour workshop provides the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin implementing the Wilson Reading System in our Intervention Model setting. The Intervention Model targets students beyond grade two who are reading or spelling below grade level and is implemented in small groups and reading classes in the general education classroom. Ideally, a certified Wilson teacher is on staff to mentor the general education teachers using the WRS in an Intervention Model setting and to support those students who do not make adequate progress and are in need of more intensive small group or 1:1 instruction.

WRS Level I Certification

Wilson Level I Certification involves online and seminar instruction, in addition to a minimum 60-lesson practicum with a student who falls in the 30th percentile or below in reading and spelling skills. Five teacher/student observations by a Wilson Trainer are required to complete the course.

The Level I Certification is designed to prepare teachers to effectively implement Steps 1-6 to assist students reading and spelling below grade level and those diagnosed with a language-based learning disability. Participants will demonstrate mastery of the Wilson lesson plan, including multisensory techniques and effective strategies in a 1:1 setting.

WRS Level II Certification

Wilson Level II Certification combines two courses: Group Mastery and Upper Steps 7-12. Group Mastery focuses on the implementation of WRS in small group settings. Upper Step 7-12 addresses more complex rules of the language, and the concepts and procedures of WRS Steps 7-12. Each course includes seminar hours and practicum. Group Mastery and Upper Steps Instruction can be combined or completed separately. Successful completion of both courses with practicum results in Level II certification.
