Summer Institute on Student Assessment and Evaluation
This four-day institute examines various types of assessments and their uses. It provides participants a comprehensive overview of the different types and purposes of formal, informal, group, and individual assessments for benchmarking, progress monitoring, and conducting comprehensive diagnostic evaluations in language areas.
On the first two days, Dr. Nancy Mather focuses on interpreting and using the results of the Woodcock-Johnson III Cognitive Battery and Tests of Achievement to identify the presence of a specific learning disability and to develop specific accommodations and interventions. On day three, Dr. Penny Axelrod addresses benchmark testing and progress monitoring through the use of instruments such as DIBELS, AIMSweb, and DORA. In addition, Barbara Wilson provides a discussion of the benefits of progress monitoring if and when this is wisely used. A hands-on experience with Fundations® and Just Words® Progress Monitoring Tools is linked to instructional decision-making for students in intervention settings. The final day’s presenter, Susan Lowell, examines the use of a component model of evaluation to look at symptoms of dyslexia and other language-based disorders as well as reviews the ethical and professional guidelines for the use of standardized assessments. Case studies and hands-on experience with various assessments are incorporated throughout the four days.
This institute is appropriate for special education teachers, reading specialists and coaches, school psychologists, diagnosticians, and administrators.
