Wilson Reading System® Level II Certification
Advanced coursework in the Wilson Reading System provides in-depth strategies to
implement multisensory structured language instruction successfully in
group settings and advanced levels of decoding and encoding. Advanced coursework includes:
*School districts can enroll a maximum of 20 teachers on
site for a flat fee of $2,400
The prerequisite for all advanced coursework is WRS Level I Certification & bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
Successful completion of all advanced courses currently offered (Advanced Strategies for MSL Instruction, WRS Group Mastery Practicum, Advanced Word Study, and WRS Steps
7-12 Practicum) results in WRS Level II Certification. Upon WRS Level II Certification, participants receive Wilson Academy / BASIC free for life, are able to represent
themselves as Wilson Level II Certified tutors, and are included in our tutor referral service. Our policy to recommend only Wilson Level I or Level II Certified Teachers is
our way of ensuring the integrity of the program. Certified individuals may also present WRS informational seminars (up to 3 hours), but are not qualified as Wilson trainers.
A school system or literacy program may contract for Level II courses at any time with a minimum number of five (5) participants (if less than five, please register as an individual).
The cost of Advanced Strategies for MSL Instruction (WRS Group Mastery) is $2,400 plus trainer expenses, if applicable, for ground / air transportation, meals, and lodging. Maximum enrollment for this workshop is 20. The WRS Group Mastery Practicum may also be contracted for a fee of $275 per participant.
The cost for Advanced Word Study (WRS Steps 7-12) is $275 per participant. The WRS Steps 7-12 Practicum may also be contracted for a fee of $275 per participant.

Advanced Strategies for MSL Instruction (WRS Group Mastery) is typically offered at select locations during the summer and fall. The cost to attend the workshop is $325 per participant.
Individuals who fulfill the prerequisites may enroll in the Advanced Word Study (WRS Steps 7-12) online course and / or either practicum at any point in the year. The cost is $275 per participant for the Advanced Word Study course, $275 per participant for the WRS Steps 7-12 Practicum, and $275 per participant for the WRS Group Mastery Practicum.
Advanced Strategies for
MSL Instruction (WRS Group Mastery)
This 10-hour (two-day) workshop delves into
essential techniques and strategies to improve all aspects of WRS
group instruction through hands-on practice and discussion, and
prepares participants for the Group Mastery Practicum. Topics include:
Ensuring and assessing group mastery
Maximizing group success while meeting individual needs
Application and integration of skills
Concept development vs. fluency
Planning and practicing lesson plan Blocks 1, 2, and 3 for
groups
Upon completion, participants who have fulfilled the requirements
of the Advanced Strategies for MSL Instruction are able to enroll
in the WRS Group Mastery Practicum.
Currently, the Advanced Strategies for MSL Instruction
(Group Mastery) Workshop is being offered for interested individuals
at the days and times listed below. This workshop is offered for school
districts and organizations for a maximum of 20 teachers on-site for
a flat fee of $2,400.
Advanced
Strategies for MSL Instruction Seminar Schedule
Early Registration
Available: Save $50 when you register within the early-registration
period.
Registration must
be submitted to Wilson three weeks (21 days) before
scheduled event to qualify for early-registration tuition
rate.
Registration
is required before the event and is processed on a first-come,
first-served basis. Payment is due at the time of registration
and includes a continental breakfast. Materials are sold separately.
Payment is refundable up to 14 days prior to the event
date, less a $25 processing fee. A confirmation letter
will be sent with directions.
While we make every effort to conduct professional development
events on the dates and locations advertised, they are
subject to change without prior notice. Wilson reserves the
right to change or cancel a professional development event
due to low enrollment or factors beyond our control. We
will attempt to notify registrants to limit customer inconvenience
but we are not liable for any expenses incurred.
The WRS Group Mastery Practicum is completed with an approved group of three
to six students according to practicum student selection criteria. The supervised practicum shall meet these requirements:
Submission of pretesting report
Delivery of 50 practicum lessons (at minimum) in accordance
with the Group Mastery Practicum Study Guide
The group must receive at least five 45-minute, four 60-minute,
or three 90-minute lessons per week (five 75-90 minute lessons
per week is optimal)
Two videotaped lessons submitted to a Wilson trainer for review
and feedback
Demonstrated proficiency in implementing all Wilson procedures
in a group setting
Practicum students must reach Substep 3.1 (or above) of the
program
Completion of student posttesting and submission of required
paperwork
Upon completion of the Group Mastery Practicum, participants are
specialized in implementing WRS in a group setting, but are not
considered WRS Level II certified unless they have completed all
advanced courses.
Practicum Student Selection Criteria
Select a group of 3-6 students for the Group Mastery
Practicum. Once a group is selected, each student must be pretested
using the WADE and an approved, norm-referenced test. The Practicum
Student Pretesting Form must be submitted to a Wilson trainer for
review and approval. Once the trainer approves the group, practicum
lessons may begin.
Students must:
Have significant decoding difficulty
Be of similar age, grade, and cognitive ability
Be able to begin instruction at the same substep, as determined
by WADE mastery scores (this applies to students who have had
previous WRS instruction)
Be grouped according to word attack scores if new to the program
(0-15%, 16-30%)
Be available to receive at least five 45-minute, four 60-minute,
or three 90-minute lessons per week (five 75-90-minute lessons
per week is optimal)
Be free of major behavioral problems and/or severe language-based
difficulties that may affect the group’s progression or
achievement
Group Achievement:
The group must reach Substep 3.1 of the Wilson Reading System

This online course provides instruction in advanced concepts of decoding and spelling. Learn to effectively use multisensory techniques to teach more complicated rules of the English language. The Advanced Word Study course is aligned with the skill-building sequence of the Wilson Reading System Steps 7-12. Detailed instruction is provided for each of the 33 substeps, including video clips of Barbara Wilson demonstrating parts 1, 2, 6, and 7 of the lesson plan, animations, text, printable materials, and assessments.
Enrollment in the online course also provides 15-month access to Wilson Academy, including the weekly enriched and decodable text passages and chats and discussions with peers and Wilson trainers.
Participants who have completed within the past 30 months or are currently enrolled in the Advanced Word Study online course are able to enroll
in the WRS Steps 7-12 Practicum.
Participants who complete the requirements of the Advanced Word Study course will receive an Acknowledgement of Completion.
The WRS Steps 7-12 Practicum is completed
with an approved student according to practicum student selection
criteria. The supervised practicum shall meet these requirements:
Pretesting report

Decode words and read sentences fluently through Step 6
Manipulate word parts and sounds
Read non-controlled decodable text with guidance
Find words in dictionary or electronic spell checker
Student Achievement:
The student must reach Substep 10.3 of the Wilson Reading
System

Upon completion of all Level II components,
participants may register for 3 professional development graduate
credits through Endicott College in Beverly, MA for an additional
fee of $225. Participants should contact WLT Customer Service Center
at (800) 899-8454 x 6779 to process the registration upon completion
of all components. All registrations will be processed within the
current college semester.
Participants must enroll in the practicum
course within 3 years of completing the corresponding course. The
practicum must be completed within 30 months from practicum registration
date for Acknowledgement of Completion to be awarded.
