Teachers should combine Fundations with a wide variety of text experiences, and expose students to poetry and narrative and informational text<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By the end of Level 2, students will be able to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Know and apply grade-level phonics and word-analysis skills in decoding words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Segment syllables into sounds (phonemes)\u2013up to six sounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify word structures such as vowels, consonants, blends, digraphs, and digraph blends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify parts of words (syllables, basewords, suffixes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify all six syllable types: closed, vowel-consonant-e, open, r-controlled, vowel digraph\/diphthong, and consonant-le<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell words with short vowels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell words with long vowels in vowel-consonant-e and open syllables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell words with r-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-us\">Read and spell words with vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ey, ea, oi, oy, oa, ow, oe, ou, oo, ue, ew, au, aw)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell words with unexpected vowel sounds (old, ild, ind, ost, olt, ive)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell words with suffixes (-s, -es, -ed,-ing, -est, -ish, -able, -ive, -y, -ful, -ment, -less, -ness, -ly, -ty)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell words with common prefixes (un-, dis-, mis-, non-, trans-, pre-, pro-, re-, de-)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell phonetically regular one-, two- and three-syllable words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and spell the first 200 high frequency words including irregular words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Divide multisyllabic words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use synonyms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know some multiple meaning words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply dictionary skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use correct writing position and pencil grip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write clear, legible manuscript at an appropriate rate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spell words with options for the grapheme representation for sounds with use of a spell checker or dictionary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply correct punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation point)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply capitalization rules for beginning of sentences and names of people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read controlled stories with fluency, expression, and understanding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read approximately 90 words per minute with fluency and understanding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retell short narrative stories, recounting key ideas and details<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retell facts from informational text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Locate facts and details in narrative and informational writing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skim for information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make judgments and predictions from given facts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine the meaning of a new word when a prefix is added to a known word<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of a compound word<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify real life connections between words and their uses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions with narrative and informational text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine the central message of a story<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify the main topic\/purpose of an informational text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading, being read to, and responding to texts, including using descriptive adjectives and adverbs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Do your rising second graders need extra support before beginning the Level 2 curriculum?
