The relationship between Wilson Language Training (WLT) and Becker College spans decades.<\/p>\n
Wilson’s first executive director, Janet O’Connor, served as an adjunct professor of early childhood education at Becker, which has campuses in Worcester and Leicester, MA.\u00a0In 2010, WLT Co-founders Barbara and Ed Wilson were each awarded an Honorary Degree in Humane Letters from the college for their work providing multisensory structured literacy instruction to teachers and students across the country.\u00a0Most recently, Ed was\u00a0appointed to Becker’s 15-member Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n
For their commitment to literacy, students, teachers, and community, the Wilsons were featured in the spring issue of Becker Magazine. The article highlights WLT’s history and growth over the past 30 years, as well as the importance of professional learning to help\u00a0students with dyslexia become independent, fluent readers, and both organizations’ shared value of creating a supportive culture for students.<\/p>\n
“Everyone [at Wilson] feels the passion of our mission and works toward our common goal of literacy for all,” Barbara shares. “We are not a one-and-done model,” she continues, “Our model occurs over time, through coaching, being in the classroom, and having teachers select students who are dyslexic that have not succeeded previously. It’s extended training that is highly rewarding. For the teachers, it becomes their ‘ah-ha’ moment.”<\/p>\n
Ed reflects, “Becker’s dedication to ensuring students find meaningful careers is vital. The College’s values resonate with the culture of our company. The way Becker supports its students is based on a culture of caring.”<\/p>\n
