As students enter upper elementary, they face more complex texts and rising academic demands across all subjects. Fundations® Levels 4–5 are designed to meet this pivotal moment—providing Tier 1 Structured Literacy instruction that reinforces foundational skills while explicitly addressing more advanced literacy concepts with the integration of sentence-level comprehension to support grade-level reading Fundations for Grades 4–5 is designed to:

  • Strengthen foundational reading and writing skills that are often not explicitly taught in core ELA programs in grades 4 and 5 to help prevent reading gaps from resurfacing.
  • Build fluency, vocabulary, morphology, spelling and sentence-level comprehension so students become confident, proficient readers
  • Equip students to successfully comprehend complex texts, preparing them for success in future learning and beyond.

Fundations Levels 4–5 feature short, daily 20-minute lessons designed to fit into the ELA block without replacing core content. Lessons are delivered through a web-based digital platform called the Lesson Delivery Tool. With enhanced scaffolding and self-paced professional learning, teachers of any experience level can deliver effective, Science of Reading-based instruction with confidence.

To better meet the needs of today’s classrooms, we’ve added exciting, user-friendly enhancements to Fundations that provide stronger teacher support and reduce prep time so educators can make an even greater impact on student success.

  • Lesson Delivery Tool: Interactive, classroom-ready slides tailored to the needs of students in Levels K–1 and 2–3, with embedded notes and annotation tools help teachers deliver consistent, high-quality instruction while saving valuable prep time. Lessons at every Level maintain the movement and multimodal learning that are central to Structured Literacy instruction.

The Lesson Delivery Tool is a web-based application accessed through FUN HUB® that helps educators confidently deliver Fundations lessons with less prep time. Lessons include prompts when students should use their printed, hands-on materials like letter tiles and student workbooks to support multimodal learning.
