H.W. Mountz School, a PreK–8 National Blue Ribbon Award School, located in Spring Lake, New Jersey, is focused on closing the gap for students struggling to read. Nicki Orr, a special education teacher, is on the front line of this effort. Thanks to Nicki for sharing how Wilson programs are enabling her students thrive.
I have been teaching for over 26 years. Most of the time, I work with students who are having a hard time learning to read, but I’ve taught almost every age and every subject.
The Wilson Reading System® and Fundations® have helped us close many learning gaps. We see great results, and students are thriving! The proof is in the data. The majority of our students are reading at or above grade level in all points of data. Our students are confident and love reading.
Wilson programs have it all! They are so well thought out, and I feel like they cover everything that needs to be covered in an organized fashion. I love how my Wilson training helps me to deliver Fundations lessons, as well, with confidence.
My students love to interact with the Fundations program. The multisensory approach to teaching reading really helps student engagement and therefore improves student performance.
The most amazing feeling is when a student is really making great progress and knows it. I believe the most impactful way to show them how far they’ve come is to show them a passage they struggled with just a few months prior. It’s a real eye opener! To some students, they forget where they started, and they are truly shocked when they see their original struggles. It makes the students feel proud of themselves.
I love the online FUN HUB® resources. I also think that the teacher’s manuals are very comprehensive for both the Wilson Reading System and Fundations.
DO it with FIDELITY. Do NOT wing it. Be willing to learn…and learn…and learn. Be willing to go for training. Be willing to reach out and ask questions.
